Then we realize that our human control is often an illusion, and we are all merely a blip in the passage of Earth's history. We take so much for granted, until it is suddenly taken from us. Isherwood's observation of the collapse of modern society, the loss of his old family, his struggle to find survivors with whom he feels comfortable to start a new life, and the new Tribe that evolves from his efforts is a tale both tragic and yet heartening in it's reaffirmation of humanity's determination and perseverance. Although written in 1949, it is still very relevant today, in light of what is happening around the world. Especially when I learned Stephen King was moved to write The Stand after reading it.
